The Cay

Set during World War II, the story follows Phillip Enright, an eleven-year-old white American boy living on the Caribbean island of Curaçao, who is aboard a ship with his mother when it is torpedoed by a German U-boat. Phillip is left stranded on a life raft with Timothy, an elderly Black West Indian sailor, and a cat named Stew Cat. An injury causes Phillip to lose his sight, forcing the privileged and initially prejudiced boy to rely entirely on Timothy, a man his mother's biases had taught him to distrust. The castaways find refuge on a tiny, deserted cay, where Timothy patiently teaches Phillip essential survival skills, helping him learn to fish, find water, and navigate the island despite his blindness. Through their shared struggle, Phillip overcomes his racial prejudice, and a profound, life-changing bond of friendship and mutual respect develops between them. Their time on the island is tragically cut short when a severe hurricane strikes, and Timothy dies while protecting Phillip from the storm's fury. Phillip is eventually rescued by a U.S. Navy ship, returning home a profoundly changed young man who is determined to honor Timothy's legacy.
