Alicia Duncan

Meet author Alicia Duncan at Tomes & Tales! Join us Saturday, August 29 from 12:00–4:00 p.m. for an author event and book signing celebrating the release of Alicia Duncan's debut memoir, The Other Side of the Straitjacket: A Daughter's Story of Mental Illness and Assisted Dying. When Alicia's mother, Donna Duncan, chose medical assistance in dying (MAiD) following a period of declining mental health, her family was left with questions about how she had been approved. What followed became Canada's first police investigation into a medically assisted death and a deeply personal search for understanding and accountability. Alicia's story has been featured nationally and internationally, including on CBC's The Fifth Estate and in the BBC documentary Better Off Dead? Her advocacy has since taken her before parliamentary committees in both Canada and the United Kingdom. Come meet Alicia, learn more about the story behind the book, and have your copy personally signed.

Parent & Kid Book Club

We’re kicking off our Parent & Kid Book Club with New Kid by Jerry Craft! 📚 We chose a graphic novel for our first pick to keep things fun and approachable and with September just around the corner, New Kid felt like the perfect way to ease kids back into the school year ✏️🚍 It’s a funny, thoughtful story about starting at a new school, finding your place, navigating friendships, and figuring out where you fit ❤️ Parents and kids can read it together, then join us for a relaxed conversation and a chance to meet other families in the community ☺️ We have limited space available.
