On the Island A Novel

Thirty-year-old English teacher Anna Emerson accepts a summer job tutoring sixteen-year-old T.J. Callahan, a cancer survivor, at his family's rental in the Maldives. On their way, their private plane crashes in the Indian Ocean, leaving Anna and T.J. stranded on an uninhabited island. Initially focused on basic survival—finding food, water, and shelter—they must also contend with the threat of violent storms and the possibility of T.J.'s cancer returning. As days turn into weeks, and then months, and T.J. celebrates another birthday, their relationship evolves as the boy gradually becomes a man, and they find an unexpected connection in their isolation.
