Helmut Koester

Helmut Heinrich Koester (1926–2016) was a preeminent American scholar of the New Testament and early Christianity. Born in Germany, he studied under Rudolf Bultmann at the University of Marburg before joining the faculty at Harvard Divinity School in 1958, where he served as the John H. Morison Professor of New Testament Studies and Winn Professor of Ecclesiastical History. He was a leading expert in New Testament exegesis, the history of early Christianity, and the archaeology of the ancient Roman world.
