Moonfleet

Set in the 18th-century fishing village of Moonfleet on the Dorset coast, this is a classic tale of adventure, smuggling, and treasure. The story follows 15-year-old orphan John Trenchard, who is fascinated by the local legend of the notorious Colonel John 'Blackbeard' Mohune, whose ghost is said to wander the churchyard searching for a hidden diamond he stole from King Charles I. While exploring the Mohune family crypt beneath the church, John overhears a meeting of smugglers and becomes entangled in their clandestine operations. He forms an unbreakable bond of friendship with Elzevir Block, the craggy, taciturn landlord of the Mohune Arms and leader of the smuggling gang. The main plot revolves around the conflict between the smugglers and the revenue men, John's quest to decode the secret of Colonel Mohune's treasure, and the deep, enduring friendship and suffering he shares with Elzevir Block as they are forced to flee the village.
