Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor is a historical novel of high adventure and a romance, set in the South West of England during the turbulent time of Monmouth's Rebellion (1685). The story is narrated by John Ridd, a young farmer whose father was murdered by the notorious and lawless Doone clan inhabiting Exmoor. As John grows to manhood, he finds love with the beautiful Lorna, who is believed to be the granddaughter of the Doone's lord, Sir Ensor. Battling his desire for revenge and the animosity of his archrival Carver Doone, John is determined to win Lorna's heart, right the wrongs done to his family, and rescue his beloved from the outlaws, leading to a climactic confrontation. The plot thickens when it is revealed that Lorna is not a Doone but the rightful heiress to a large fortune.
