Cobb, a devoted teacher on sabbatical, sets out to retrace Henry David Thoreau's historic journey along the Allagash Waterway by kayak. On the river, he meets Mary, a beautiful, free-spirited, and experienced outdoorswoman, and the two immediately fall deeply in love.
