Homicide detective Eve Dallas must untangle a twisted family history while a hostage's life hangs in the balance. The case begins when a woman's body is found on a New York City playground bench. She was clean and neatly arranged, but had new tattoos and piercings, clothes decades out of date, a fatal wound hidden by a ribbon, and a note nearby reading 'Bad Mommy' written in crayon. Eve turns to the department's top profiler, who confirms they are dealing with a killer whose childhood involved trauma, a situation Eve is familiar with. Clues suggest the perpetrator is roughly sixty years old with no record of old crimes fitting the MO. As Eve investigates what reopened such an old wound, she discovers other young women who physically resemble the first victim have vanished. The urgency escalates as she races to find her way into the past and the cold depths of a shattered mind to solve the case.
