Set in a suburban Mumbai housing colony, Saraswati Park tells the story of Mohan Karekar, a contemplative, middle-aged letter-writer whose life has become stagnant. Mohan, who works outside the main post office in a dying profession, spends his time collecting second-hand books and secretly dreaming of becoming a writer, a passion that contributes to the 'thawing' of his marriage to Lakshmi. At this delicate moment, the couple is joined by their nineteen-year-old nephew, Ashish, a diffident and sexually uncertain college student who has to repeat his final year. As the novel unfolds, the lives of the three characters are thrown into sharp relief by the frustrations of family life, unspoken yearnings, and unheard grievances. Lakshmi leaves Bombay to mourn the death of her brother and the 'vital force' of her marriage, while Ashish navigates his identity through an affair with a richer classmate and succumbs to the overtures of his English tutor. Mohan, scribbling in the margins of his books, worries about his wife's return, Ashish's future, and whether he will ever find his own voice to write about the world he observes.
