Set in India of the early 1950s, shortly after the country's independence and partition, A Suitable Boy is an epic family saga that follows the lives of four interconnected families: the Mehras, Kapoors, Khans, and Chatterjis, over a period of 18 months. The central plot revolves around Mrs. Rupa Mehra's quest to find a 'suitable boy' for her headstrong, 19-year-old daughter, Lata, to marry, following the wedding of her older daughter, Savita. Lata, a university student, finds herself torn between three very different suitors: Kabir Durrani, a handsome, charming Muslim student whose religion makes him unacceptable to her Hindu mother; Haresh Khanna, an ambitious, practical shoe manufacturer with a complicated past; and Amit Chatterji, an England-educated poet and author who is part of the Mehra family's extended social circle. Simultaneously, the novel provides a panoramic view of the political and social landscape of the emerging nation, examining complex issues such as Hindu-Muslim strife, the abolition of the feudal Zamindari system, land reform, and the lead-up to India's first post-Independence national election of 1952. The narrative also includes a major subplot following Maan Kapoor, the reckless younger son of a prominent politician, and his controversial, passionate relationship with the Muslim courtesan and singer Saeeda Bai. It is a sweeping exploration of love, tradition, duty, and modernity in a newly independent India.
