A Suitable Boy

Set in a newly post-independence and post-partition India in 1951–1952, A Suitable Boy is an epic saga that follows the lives of four interconnected families over a period of eighteen months. The central plot revolves around Mrs. Rupa Mehra's determined efforts to arrange the marriage of her younger daughter, Lata, to a 'suitable boy.' Nineteen-year-old Lata, a university student, is torn between her mother’s traditional expectations and her own heart, navigating the choice between three vastly different suitors: Kabir Durrani, a charming Muslim student; Haresh Khanna, an ambitious shoe executive; and Amit Chatterji, an acclaimed writer and poet. Beyond Lata's romantic dilemma, the novel presents a vast, panoramic portrait of a complex society in flux, incorporating a major subplot following Maan Kapoor's scandalous affair with the courtesan Saeeda Bai. The narrative richly examines the political and social issues of the time, including the country's first post-Independence general election, Hindu-Muslim tensions, the abolition of the oppressive Zamindari system, and the clash between old traditions and modern progress.
