A Farewell to Arms

Set against the backdrop of World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the story of Lieutenant Frederic Henry, an American serving as an ambulance driver in the Italian Army. Initially indifferent to the war and his personal relationships, Henry begins a love affair with Catherine Barkley, a beautiful English nurse who is still mourning the death of her fiancé. After Henry is seriously wounded, he convalesces in a Milan hospital where his relationship with Catherine deepens, and he falls deeply in love with her. Catherine soon becomes pregnant. As the war intensifies, Henry is sent back to the front, but during the Italian army's disastrous retreat after the Battle of Caporetto, he deserts to escape execution by his own military police. He reunites with Catherine and the couple flees Italy, crossing Lake Maggiore to neutral Switzerland, where they live a quiet life. The story culminates in tragedy when Catherine suffers a difficult labor, resulting in a stillbirth, and she subsequently dies from a hemorrhage, leaving Henry desolate and grappling with profound grief. The novel explores themes of love, loss, disillusionment, and the harsh realities of wartime.
