The Red Badge of Courage

Henry Fleming, a young, naive Union soldier in the American Civil War, enlists with romantic dreams of heroism and glory on the battlefield. When he finally faces combat, his illusions are shattered by the bloodshed and horrors of war, and he is overcome with fear, causing him to flee the front lines. Tormented by shame and guilt, Henry longs for a 'red badge of courage'—a wound that would outwardly prove his bravery and counteract his cowardice. After witnessing the brutal reality of war and the death of a friend, he eventually returns to his regiment. In the subsequent fierce battles, Henry confronts his inner turmoil, fights with determined resilience, and ultimately finds a sense of redemption and newfound self-respect, transforming his understanding of courage.
