Sooley A Novel

Samuel “Sooley” Sooleymon is a raw, young basketball talent from a small village in South Sudan with big hoop dreams. In the summer of his seventeenth year, he gets the chance of a lifetime to travel to the United States with his South Sudanese teammates to play in a showcase basketball tournament to be scouted by college coaches. During the tournament, Samuel receives devastating news from home: a civil war is raging across South Sudan, his father is dead, his sister is missing, and his mother and two younger brothers are in a refugee camp. Unable to return home, he is offered a scholarship to North Carolina Central. Driven by a fierce determination to succeed so he can earn enough money to bring his family to America, he works tirelessly to improve his game. With his new team suffering losses and injuries, Sooley is called off the bench and a legend begins, setting the stage for a story about how far one young man's success can take his team and whether it will allow him to save his family.
