High school all-American Neely Crenshaw returns to his small hometown of Messina, fifteen years after his glory days as a star quarterback for the legendary Messina Spartans. He has come home for the impending funeral of his controversial and iconic football coach, Eddie Rake, the man who molded the Spartans into an unbeatable dynasty. As Coach Rake's former 'boys' sit in the creaky wooden bleachers of their old stadium, they replay the old games, relive the old glories, and try to decide once and for all whether they love their demanding coach—or hate him.
