The Summons A Novel

Ray Atlee, a law professor at the University of Virginia, is summoned by his ailing father, Judge Atlee—a powerful and well-respected figure in local law and politics—to the family home in Clanton, Mississippi, to discuss his estate. Ray reluctantly travels to his hometown, but the meeting does not take place because his father dies too soon. Ray discovers a shocking secret in the house: more than three million dollars in cash hidden away. The money is unmentioned in the Judge's will and appears to have been obtained illegally. Ray, conflicted about the moral and legal implications of the mysterious fortune, decides to take the money without reporting it, but he soon realizes that he is not the only one who knows about the secret stash, leading him into a dangerous situation as someone else attempts to claim the cash.
