The Captain and the Enemy

The novel follows Victor Baxter, a young boy who is suddenly removed from his boarding school by a mysterious stranger known only as 'the Captain,' who claims to have won him from his absent father in a game of backgammon. Victor is taken to live with the Captain's mistress, Liza, serving as her companion and link to the outside world. As Victor (who changes his name to Jim) grows into a young man, the Captain remains an enigmatic and largely absent figure. After Liza's death, Jim travels to Central America, where the Captain is involved in shadowy activities, including gun-running and international espionage, leading to a dramatic confrontation as Jim finally uncovers the truth of the Captain's secret life.
