Joshua Charles Taylor

Joshua Charles Taylor (1917-1981) was an American art historian, educator, and museum director. He was a professor of art history at the University of Chicago and later served as the director of the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution. Taylor is known for his book 'Learning to Look: a Handbook for the Visual Arts,' which became a standard text in art history courses. He also authored 'The Fine Arts in America' and co-edited 'Theories of Modern Art: A Source Book by Artists and Critics.' Taylor served in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning a Bronze Star. He was born in Hillsboro, Oregon, and died in Washington, D.C.
