Sir Kingi Matutaera Ihaka

Sir Kingi Matutaera Ihaka (1921-1993) was a respected translator, Anglican minister, broadcaster, musician, and Māori language champion. He was a prominent figure in Māori culture and arts, serving as Māori Language Commissioner and receiving a knighthood for his services to the Māori people. Ihaka was also known for his musical compositions, including his popular adaptation of 'The Twelve Days of Christmas,' titled 'A Pukeko in a Ponga Tree.' He was a founding member of the Putiki Māori Club and played a significant role in various community organizations and cultural groups.
