Patrick O'Brian (born Richard Patrick Russ) was an English novelist and translator, best known for the twenty-volume Aubrey–Maturin series of naval historical novels set during the Napoleonic Wars. His works are celebrated for their historical detail, rich characterisation, and authentic period language. He received the Heywood Hill Literary Prize and was appointed a CBE.
