The Wine-dark Sea

The sixteenth volume in the beloved Aubrey/Maturin series. Captain Jack Aubrey and surgeon-spy Stephen Maturin pursue an American privateer through the Great South Sea. The voyage begins with the strange color of the ocean, which reminds Stephen of Homer's description, and is soon followed by an underwater volcanic eruption that creates a new island. Their ship, the *Surprise*, now sails as a privateer, which is intended to support Stephen's secret mission to ignite a revolution in South America. During their separate adventures, Jack endures a desperate open-boat journey and encounters his illegitimate son, while Stephen, after a failed coup, must flee into the high, frozen wastes of the Andes. The two are eventually reunited for a final, breathtaking chase through the stormy seas and icebergs south of Cape Horn, where the hunters unexpectedly become the hunted.
