Tess of the D'Urbervilles

Set in Thomas Hardy's fictional Wessex, this novel tells the tragic story of Tess Durbeyfield, the daughter of a poor, dissipated villager who learns that his family may be descended from the ancient, noble d'Urberville family. In her search for respectability, Tess's fortunes fluctuate wildly. The story explores her relationships with two very different men: Alec d'Urberville, a wealthy, dissolute young man who seduces her, and Angel Clare, her provincial and unforgiving husband. Tess struggles against the double standards and hypocrisy of the rural Victorian world, a conflict that ultimately assumes the proportions of a Greek tragedy, culminating in a horrible, desperate act.
