Set in a distant future on the desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune, the story follows the young Paul Atreides, heir to House Atreides, whose family accepts the stewardship of this inhospitable world. Arrakis is the only source of "melange," or "spice," a tremendously valuable drug essential for extending life, enhancing mental abilities, and facilitating interstellar travel. The appointment is a trap orchestrated by the noble family's rivals, House Harkonnen, which leads to the betrayal and near-destruction of Paul's family. Fleeing into the harsh desert with his mother, Paul finds refuge with the native Fremen people. As he evolves into the mysterious figure known as Muad'Dib, he discovers his immense latent powers, which are a result of a long-term breeding scheme. He ultimately leads the Fremen in a rebellion to reclaim Arrakis and confronts a destiny that will change the course of the universe.
