Two eleven-year-old girls, Alice Manning and Ronnie Fuller, are banished from a neighborhood birthday party and take a wrong turn down an unfamiliar Baltimore street where they find an abandoned stroller with an infant inside. What happens next is shocking and terrible, resulting in the death of the infant and the irreparable devastation of three families. Seven years later, Alice and Ronnie, now eighteen, are released from juvenile detention to begin their lives over again. However, the secrets surrounding the original crime continue to haunt the adults in their lives, including the police detective on the original case, Nancy Porter. Soon after the girls' release, another child disappears under freakishly similar circumstances, forcing an investigation into both the current and long-ago crime and uncovering the true dynamics and dark history of the two young women.
