The sea wolf (The World's best reading)
Jack London
The novel is a psychological adventure story that begins when Humphrey Van Weyden, a wealthy, sheltered literary critic, is shipwrecked in San Francisco Bay after a ferry collision. He is rescued by the Ghost, a seal-hunting schooner captained by the brutal, yet highly intelligent, Wolf Larsen, who forces Van Weyden to become a cabin boy and join the crew. Under Larsen's ruthless dominance and Nietzschean philosophy, Van Weyden is thrust into a harsh, survivalist life at sea, which tests his moral principles and initiates a profound physical and mental transformation, challenging his civilized beliefs. The story intensifies with a failed mutiny against Larsen and the later rescue of another castaway, a poet named Maud Brewster, who becomes a love interest for Van Weyden. Van Weyden and Brewster eventually escape the increasingly unstable and violent Larsen in a small boat and land on a deserted island. Coincidentally, the Ghost, now crewed only by a blind and ailing Larsen, also crashes ashore on the island. The two survivors work to repair the damaged schooner while contending with Larsen's final, desperate acts of sabotage, ultimately leading to the tyrannical captain's downfall and their eventual rescue.
