Tally is eagerly awaiting her sixteenth birthday, the day she will undergo the operation that transforms her from a 'repellent ugly' into a 'stunningly attractive pretty.' As a pretty, she will live in a high-tech paradise where her only concern is having fun. However, Tally's new friend Shay is skeptical of the procedure and runs away to an un-governed settlement called the Smoke. When Shay disappears, Tally learns about a disturbing side of the pretty world. The authorities give Tally an ultimatum: find Shay and turn her in, or forfeit her own chance to become pretty forever. Tally's choice sets her on a journey that will change her life and her world.
