Grace Mae, a young woman from a prominent Boston family, is committed to an insane asylum to conceal her out-of-wedlock pregnancy and the horrific family secrets that led to it. Her brilliant mind and sharp memory are discovered in the asylum's dark cellars by a visiting doctor interested in the new study of criminal psychology. Recognizing her keen intellect, the doctor recruits Grace as his assistant and, after faking her death, takes her to a more ethical asylum in Ohio. Operating under the cloak of madness, Grace helps the doctor practice amateur offender profiling, beginning a new life solving crimes. However, gruesome nights soon bring Grace and the doctor into the circle of a serial killer stalking young women, forcing Grace to hunt a murderer while confronting the demons in her own past.
