The Gospel of Thomas The Gnostic Wisdom of Jesus
Jean-Yves Leloup
This book provides a new translation and in-depth analysis of the Gospel of Thomas, one of the non-canonical texts discovered in 1945 at Nag Hammadi. Unlike the canonical gospels, the Gospel of Thomas does not include a narrative of Christ's life or prophecies, but instead is a collection of 114 sayings, or 'logia,' attributed to Jesus. Author Jean-Yves Leloup presents the Jesus of Thomas as having much in common with gnostics of non-dualistic schools, preaching the coming of a 'new man' and the genesis of a 'man of knowledge.' The commentary explores the gospel's gnostic significance, describing a journey from limited to unlimited consciousness. Leloup argues that the Jesus of this text invites the reader to attain the self-knowledge that will make each of us a 'Christ' or 'gnostic,' rather than merely a 'good Christian.'
