Cranford/Cousin Phillis
Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell
This volume contains two of Elizabeth Gaskell's works, 'Cranford' and the novella 'Cousin Phillis.' 'Cranford' depicts the lives and preoccupations of the inhabitants of a small village, which is primarily dominated by women, including the kindly spinster Miss Matty. The story explores their petty snobberies and appetite for gossip, as well as their loyal support for one another in times of need. The arrival of men, such as 'modern' Captain Brown, introduces disruption and excitement to their everyday life. The accompanying novella, 'Cousin Phillis,' depicts a fleeting love affair within a rural community at a time when old values are beginning to be supplanted by the new. Both stories are noted as exquisitely observed tragicomedies of human nature, told with great delicacy and affection.
