The Plains of Passage

The Plains of Passage is the fourth book in Jean M. Auel's Earth's Children series, continuing the epic story of Ayla and Jondalar, set in Ice Age Europe. The novel follows Ayla and Jondalar on a long and dangerous cross-continental odyssey, traveling west along the Great Mother River (the Danube) from the home of the Mammoth Hunters to Jondalar's homeland in what is now France. They travel on horseback, which is a phenomenon new and frightening to the hunter-gatherers they meet along the way, making them appear enigmatic. The mystery surrounding Ayla is heightened by her strange accent, her ability to talk to animals with their own sounds, and her uncanny control of a powerful wolf. The tall, yellow-haired Jondalar is also held in awe for the magnificent stallion he commands and for his skill in crafting stone tools, including the new weapon he devises, the spear-thrower. In the course of their journey, the couple encounters both savage enemies and brave friends, with every step bringing them closer to their ultimate destination: the place on earth they can call home. The book concludes with their successful return to the Zelandoni, Jondalar's people, and the confirmation of Ayla's pregnancy.
