The Last Crossing
Guy Vanderhaeghe
Set in the late nineteenth century, The Last Crossing is a sweeping epic that journeys from Victorian England to the whiskey trading posts of the American and Canadian West. Englishmen Charles and Addington Gaunt are dispatched by their tyrannical father to find their brother Simon, a religious idealist who has gone missing in the wilds of the American frontier in 1871. In the Montana town of Fort Benton, the brothers hire an enigmatic guide, Jerry Potts, who is half-Blackfoot and half-Scot, to lead them further north. The search party evolves into an unlikely posse, including a sycophantic journalist, a Civil War veteran in search of love, and the fiercely determined Lucy Stoveall, a woman bent on a mission of revenge for the murder of her sister. Told from multiple viewpoints, the novel follows the group as they confront the dangers of the lawless new world and their own personal conflicts.
