The Silmarillion
J. R. R Tolkien
The Silmarillion is an account of the Elder Days, or the First Age of J. R. R. Tolkien's world, serving as the foundational history and mythological precursor to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. It is divided into five parts. The *Ainulindalë* is a creation myth; the *Valaquenta* describes the nature and powers of the Valar, or 'gods.' The main body of the work, the *Quenta Silmarillion*, narrates the epic saga of the High Elves' war against Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, for the recovery of the three sacred jewels called the Silmarils, which contained the pure light of Valinor. It also recounts the great tales of love and tragedy, such as that of Beren and Lúthien. The final sections include the *Akallabêth*, which chronicles the downfall of the great island kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age, and *Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age*, which gives a brief summary of the events leading up to and narrated in The Lord of the Rings.
