J. R. R. Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist, and academic. He is best known as the author of the classic high-fantasy works The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. His works established the fantasy genre as a popular literary form and have had a profound influence on modern fantasy literature, film, and gaming. Tolkien was also a distinguished scholar of Old and Middle English, holding professorial chairs at the Universities of Leeds and Oxford.
