Little House on the Prairie
Laura Ingalls Wilder
This semi-autobiographical novel, the second in the 'Little House' series, follows the Ingalls family as they leave their home in the Big Woods of Wisconsin and set out in a covered wagon for the vast, open prairie of Kansas, which was then designated as Indian Territory. The story chronicles their adventures and hardships over a year as Pa Ingalls builds a new log cabin for his family—Ma, Mary, Laura, and baby Carrie—on the frontier. They face the challenges of pioneer life, including illness (malaria), establishing their farm, and navigating tensions with the local Osage community. Despite their hard work and perseverance, the family is ultimately forced to abandon their new home when they learn that their homestead is located illegally on an Indian reservation and white settlers are to be removed by the government.
