Father of the Rain

This novel spans three decades, tracing the complex and volatile relationship between Daley Amory and her charismatic, yet deeply flawed, alcoholic father, Gardiner Amory. When Daley is eleven, her mother leaves her father, a New England WASP whose conservative world is unraveling. Daley is forced to negotiate the widening chasm between her parents' conflicting worlds: her mother's liberal realm and her father's liquor-soaked, increasingly chaotic life. As Gardiner's basest impulses are unleashed, Daley must choose her own survival over the father she loves. As an adult, Daley retreats from her father's influence, but when he hits rock bottom, she is lured home by the dream of helping him get sober. She risks everything, including her professional dreams and her new love, Jonathan, who represents so much of what her father claims to hate, in a final attempt to repair a broken trust and free her father from a lifetime of dependency.
