Digging to America A Novel

Two families, the Iranian-American Yazdans and the all-American Donaldsons, meet at the Baltimore airport while awaiting the arrival of their newly adopted infant daughters from Korea. The Yazdans, including the elegant and reserved matriarch, Maryam, and the boisterous Donaldsons, led by Bitsy and Brad, decide to throw an impromptu 'arrival party,' which becomes an annual tradition, intertwining the two families' lives. As they raise their daughters, both families grapple with questions of assimilation and American identity. The novel centers on Iranian-born Maryam Yazdan, who, after 35 years in the U.S., must confront her own sense of 'outsiderness' and her cherished traditional values when she is courted by Bitsy Donaldson's recently widowed father.
