Narrated by the young Daniel, *Elmet* tells the story of his precarious life with his older sister, Cathy, and their imposing, former bare-knuckle-fighter father, John, whom they call 'Daddy.' Following the death of their grandmother, the family moves to a self-built house in a secluded copse in the woods of Elmet, a part of Yorkshire, living an off-grid, self-sufficient existence that is outside of conventional society. Daddy, a man of immense strength and simmering violence, provides for them by hunting and occasionally taking on 'secret, brutal work' to settle scores for money. Their isolated idyll is threatened when wealthy local landowner, Mr. Price, asserts his claim over the land on which their home is built. The conflict between the powerful landowner and the fiercely protective father, who attempts to organize resistance on behalf of his neighbors and the local poor, escalates into a clash of social classes, which ultimately sets in motion a chain of violent events that can only end in tragedy. The story is framed by Daniel's journey north, after the catastrophic culmination of the violence, as he searches for someone and reflects on the family's lost innocence and the terrifying depths of his father's love and rage.
