The blasted pine : an anthology of satire, invective and disrespectful verse
Francis R. Scott
The Blasted Pine is an anthology of satire, invective, and disrespectful verse, chiefly by Canadian writers, selected by F.R. Scott and A.J.M. Smith. It reveals a long tradition of energetic and sometimes savage self-criticism among Canadian poets, which has persisted since the mid-nineteenth century. The editors intended the collection to "blast" the 'stately pine' of Canadian complacency and chauvinism with the "native fires of satire," serving as "a bomb to blast complacency, a wind to scatter the cobwebs of old conformities" and a means to attack Canadian institutions and the contemporary Establishment's false standards.
