Crosshairs A Novel
Catherine Hernandez
In a terrifyingly familiar near-future, following massive floods that cause rampant devastation and homelessness, a government-sanctioned regime called the 'Boots' institutes a systemic social cleansing dubbed the 'Renovation.' This fascist regime seizes the opportunity to round up those deemed 'Other'—including communities of colour, the disabled, and the LGBTQ2S—and force them into labour camps in Toronto. The story centres on Kay, a queer Black performer and the gay son of Filipino and Jamaican immigrants, who is separated from his lover, Evan, and is forced to go on the run after losing his livelihood. Kay eventually joins the Resistance, a civilian-led movement, where he allies with others like Bahadur, a transmasculine refugee, and Firuzeh, a social worker. Guiding them is Beck, a rogue army officer who trains them for an uprising planned to take place at a major internationally televised event. Crosshairs is a dystopian cautionary tale that grapples with oppressive systems and state-sanctioned violence, exploring the fierce and vibrant desire to thrive, love, and be loved as one's true self in the face of hatred and distrust.
