In 1959, Florence Green, a middle-aged widow, decides to risk her small inheritance to open the only bookshop in the small, insular coastal town of Hardborough, Suffolk. She chooses to set up shop in the dilapidated Old House, despite the building being damp and supposedly haunted. Florence faces polite but ruthless opposition from the town's influential socialite, Mrs. Gamart, who has her own designs on the property for an arts center. Despite initial success, and the help of a young assistant, Florence's dream is ultimately thwarted when Mrs. Gamart's political maneuvering leads to the compulsory purchase and her eviction, leaving Florence with the realization that a town that lacks a bookshop isn't always a town that wants one.
