Hearts in Atlantis

Hearts in Atlantis is a collection of five deeply resonant and disturbing interconnected stories, set sequentially from 1960 to 1999, all of which are deeply rooted in the 1960s and scarred by the Vietnam War. In the first story, 'Low Men in Yellow Coats,' eleven-year-old Bobby Garfield discovers a world of predatory malice in his own neighborhood and the unsettling truth that adults can be the source of terror. The title story sees a group of college students become deeply involved in a card game, confronting their own 'collective heart of darkness' amidst the possibility of protest and the looming threat of the draft. Later tales, including 'Blind Willie' and 'Why We're in Vietnam,' follow men who grew up with Bobby as they attempt to fill the emptiness of the post-Vietnam era. The collection culminates in 'Heavenly Shades of Night Are Falling,' where Bobby returns to his hometown to face a final secret and potentially find redemption.
