Pet Peeve, the 29th novel in the Xanth series, follows the quest of Goody Goblin, a mild-mannered and courteous anomaly among his ill-tempered race, who is assigned a task by the Good Magician Humphrey to find a suitable home for a 'Pet Peeve.' The Pet Peeve is a foul-mouthed, annoying bird that can mimic the voice of the person carrying it. Guarded by the warrior Hannah Barbarian, Goody sets out, but his mission unknowingly triggers an invasion of Xanth by an abominable army of automatons from a faraway Robot World. Goody must then enlist the aid of Xanth's many denizens, including dragons, zombies, centaurs, and goblins, to unite and repel the mechanical marauders. During his adventure, he finds an unexpected ally and new love in Gwenny Goblin, the first female goblin chief, and ultimately finds a home for the Pet Peeve.
