Exit Music

Set in late autumn in Edinburgh, *Exit Music* follows Detective Inspector John Rebus in the final days before his forced retirement, an event his superiors eagerly anticipate. A new case lands on his desk: the brutal murder of a dissident Russian poet, which is quickly dismissed by the political and banking elite as a mugging gone wrong, as they host a high-level delegation of Russian businessmen looking to expand their interests in the city. Rebus and DS Siobhan Clarke, however, suspect a deeper conspiracy at play, especially after a second murder occurs. As Rebus digs further into the links between the Russian delegation, local politicians, bankers, and even his old gangster nemesis, 'Big Ger' Cafferty, a premeditated and brutal assault on Cafferty places Rebus squarely in the frame, threatening to end his long and controversial career under the worst possible circumstances, just days from the finish line. The case ultimately becomes Rebus's final and most personal battle to deliver justice.
