The Order A Novel

Legendary spy and art restorer Gabriel Allon is on holiday in Venice when Pope Paul VII suddenly dies. Gabriel is summoned to Rome by Archbishop Luigi Donati, the Holy Father's loyal private secretary, who suspects the Pope was murdered, citing a missing Swiss Guard and a cryptic letter the Pope was writing to Gabriel. The letter mentions a long-suppressed gospel found in the Vatican Secret Archives that calls into question the accuracy of the New Testament. Gabriel learns that a shadowy Catholic society with ties to the European far right, 'The Order of St. Helena,' is plotting to seize control of the papacy and will stop at nothing to prevent the gospel's release. As the cardinals gather for the conclave, Gabriel races to find the gospel and expose the Order's conspiracy, a quest that takes him through Florence, Assisi, and the hidden depths of the Secret Archives.
