This true-crime book tells the story of Ken Rex McElroy, an illiterate hog farmer who terrorized the small town of Skidmore, Northwest Missouri, for over twenty years with a string of crimes including rape, robbery, and arson. Repeatedly, the local law enforcement and courts failed to convict or even restrain him, leaving the community feeling unprotected and convinced the law was incapable of helping them. In July 1981, McElroy was shot to death on the town's main street in front of approximately 45 witnesses. No one was ever indicted for the murder, as the town protected the killers with silence. The book details McElroy's reign of terror, the circumstances of his public killing, and the moral and legal aftermath of a community taking justice into its own hands.
