The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy is the parallel, companion novel to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, told from Queenie Hennessy's perspective. Queenie is in a hospice in Berwick Upon Tweed, dying of cancer, when she is shocked to learn that her old colleague, Harold Fry, is walking the entire length of England to save her, believing that as long as he walks, she will live. Her initial note was meant to be a goodbye, and Harold's decision to walk causes her both alarm and fear. A new volunteer at the hospice suggests Queenie write to him again—only this time, she must tell Harold everything. The novel is presented as this long, confessional letter, where Queenie embarks on a journey of her own to find atonement for the past. She lays bare the long-buried truths she has kept secret for twenty years, detailing her past, her heartbreak, her unrequited love for Harold, her friendship with his son David, and the devastating secret she has been holding onto all this time.
