The Empty Pot
In an ancient Chinese kingdom, the wise Emperor announces a peculiar contest to choose his successor. He distributes flower seeds to all the young boys, tasking each with the responsibility of nurturing one into a bloom. The one who presents the most magnificent flower will inherit the throne. Among the hopefuls is Ping, a sincere and hardworking boy. Despite his devoted efforts—patiently planting, watering, and tending to his seed—Ping's seed stubbornly refuses to sprout, leaving him with nothing but an empty pot. As the day of the grand presentation arrives, Ping is the only one who arrives with an empty pot, deeply ashamed but unwilling to lie. He faces the Emperor with his barren offering, expecting judgment. However, the Emperor, having given out seeds that were actually boiled and therefore incapable of growing, is not looking for horticultural skill. He reveals that he sought to identify a future leader whose character was as strong and truthful as his actions. Ping's honesty, demonstrated by his willingness to present his failure rather than an artificial success, proves him to be the most worthy, making the story a profound exploration of integrity, character, and the true meaning of success. The compelling nature lies in its simple yet powerful moral, the unexpected resolution, and its gentle encouragement of children to value truthfulness above all else.
