The Long Sword

1358: France is a land in turmoil, ravaged by the aftermath of the Battle of Poitiers and the Black Death. With the French King a prisoner in England, the countryside is terrorized by the 'Great Companies'—mercenary bands that answer to no one and loot at will. William Gold, a young man who has already seen the worst of war, is a fugitive seeking a new life. He enters the service of the legendary mercenary commander Sir John Hawkwood. As they traverse a continent on fire, from the papal court in Avignon to the warring city-states of Italy, Gold must navigate a world of shifting loyalties and brutal violence.
