The Fire Court is the sequel to The Ashes of London, set in Restoration London in 1667, after the Great Fire has ravaged the city. London is slowly rebuilding, a process overseen by the 'Fire Court' which is tasked with settling legal disputes over property to facilitate construction. James Marwood, son of a traitor and working for Charles II's Intelligence Service, is thrust into a new murder investigation when his ailing father claims to have stumbled upon a murdered woman near the Fire Court. Shortly after, his father is killed in what appears to be an accident, plunging Marwood into a quest for the truth as he suspects foul play and discovers the body of a woman in the ruins. Compelled to uncover the truth, Marwood seeks out Cat Lovett, a regicide's daughter who is still in hiding under the name Jane Hakesby. They must work together to confront a vicious and increasingly desperate killer whose actions threaten the future of the city itself.
