Henning Georg Mankell (3 February 1948 – 5 October 2015) was a Swedish novelist, playwright and theatre director best known for creating Inspector Kurt Wallander and for his contributions to Nordic noir. He wrote crime novels, plays and books for younger readers, and was active as a social critic and philanthropist, particularly supporting projects in Africa. Mankell split his time between Sweden and Mozambique and his works have been translated into many languages and adapted for television and film.
